BAND CONTEST.

HAWERA’S SUCCESS Stratford Second in the Hymn Test. The annual Taranaki band contest held at Waitara on Saturday proved highly successful. The Hawera Municipal Band won the three B. grad® shields, and also the George Cup, presented by the Mayor of Waitara for the hymn test. The band was given high praise by the judge, Mr T. Goodall, after the hymn and selection. He said Stratford should not feel "01M. in the cold,” because it had met something above the average B grade standard. Winners of shields were: B Grade. Aggregate: Hawera Municipal Band. Selection: Hawera Municipal Band. Quickstep: Hawera Municipal Band. George Shield, hymn (open Jo C grade bands): Hawera Municipal Band. C Grade. Aggregate: Waitara Municipal Band. Selection: Waitara Municipal Band Quickstep: Patea Municipal Band. Pipe Bands. Selection (Thomson Shield): H."n wera Pipe Band. Quickstep: New Plymouth Caledonian Pipe Band. There were large attendances at the Camp Reserve -for the quicksteps and at the Theatre Royal for the hymns and selections. More than £ll2 was taken in thfe afternoon and the theatre was booked out ,for the ) evening sessions.
