SWEATED LABOUR.
Japanese Conditions. Washington, April 7. Mr Shaw, British textile workers’ delegate at the textile conference, condemned Japanese "sweatshop” conditions. H eal'di it was typical that cotton cloth cost th.ree times as much to produce in Lancashire as in Japan. He cited the longer working day and the lack of a weekly rest day. Mr Zen, a Japanese employers’ delegate, defended Japan’s policy and cited the differences in the purchasing pevVer of money, customs, traditions and temperament.
