IMPORTANT AIR BASE

HONG KONG’S FUTURE EXTENSIVE FORTIFICATIONS. Expenditure of £8,000,000. Press Association—Copyright. Received 10.40 a.m. London, April 2. The announcement is expected shortly regarding extensive fortifications at Hong Kong, which are likely to involve increased anti-aircraft batteries and the expansion of the Royal Air Force. A message from Hong Kong says that the plans involve an expenditure of £8,000,000. They include the construction of two new forts in addition to the one already being built. It is also confirmed that Hong Kong in future will be an important Air Force base. It has long been recognised that Hong Kong is one of the Empire’s most vulnerable spots in the Pacific that could not be protected at short notice from Singapore. For this reason, fortification is inescapable.
