Walker, leader of the proposed British Expedition to the' Antarctic, has returned from Norway, where he provisionally selected a three-master schooner, of 470 tons, which is at present trading in Arctic waters. Mr. Waters intends to rename it the Shackleton. Hs has received 1300 .applications from women, but he does not intend to accept any of them.. He believes that women would not stand, up to the conditions that will be experienced over such a long period. The expedition will number 32, including the ship’s crew and a scientific staff. It will be away for two years, departing in June, and it expects to arrive at. the last port of call. Lyttelton, New Zealand, in November. After spending a month at Lyttel ton, the expedition will proceed to the Polar regions, dropping a party at Wood Bay and another at Boss Island. It will return to Lyttelton for the winter. The expedition will take ;.n aeroplane and it hopes to make contact with the outside world by wireless. The members of the expedition will wear windproof outfits, inste.-.d of the usual fur coats.
