GHOST MEMORIAL.
Missing Australians. Work has been started again on the foundations of the’Australian war memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, near Amiens, in France. It is likely that the King will be asked by the Commonwealth Government to perform the unveiling next year. This is the only war memorial now in course of construction in France. It has been called “the Ghost Memorial.” It was planned in 1928 as a £lOO,OOO monument to commemorate 11,000 of Australia’s soldiers reported missing following the great attack in April, 1918, but work was suspended in 1930 because of the financial crisis.
An official of the High Commissioner’s Office said: “We are now definitely going on with our war memorial. The necessary money has been allocated, and the contracts arranged for various sections. Sir Edwyn Lutyens has been invited to prepare a new design, and it is not expected that there will be any further hitch.”
