NEWS BREVITIES.
TEACHERS’ RESIDENCES. Steps toward the conducting of a survey of country teachers’ residences are to be taken by the Hawke’s Bay Education Board, and as a result of this survey the Government will be asked to improve those houses which do not come up to the housing standard required by the Government. “People in the country are entitled to have as good houses and as good service as people living in more closely populated areas,” said the chairman of the board, Mr. G. A. Maddison, on whose motion it was decided that the survey should be conducted.
H.M.S. WELLINGTON’S CALL. An unexpected arrival in Wellington harbour yesterday was the sloop H.M.S. Wellington, which called to pick up two officers and 11 ratings of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (Wellington Division). This party will remain in the ship during minesweeping exercises to be carried out in the next five days. The Wellington departed during the day to rendezvous with H.M.S. Leith, near Akaroa, and will return with its R.N.V.R. party on March 25.
CAR REGULATIONS. Garage proprietors appear to be taking seriously the duties that have devolved on them since the introduction of the regulations that require motor par owners, to have Warrant? of fitness in respect of their vehicles Inquiries in Wellington do not indi cate that the complaints from Auck land, of garage proprietors inducing motorists to have work done which is not necessary to safety, are general.
