He is keenly interested in 'harbours iand coaitial- trading ' hopes to study conditions in the DoI minion. , In 1927 he read his first paper on ■ the design of coastal vessels to the j Institute of Marine Arc,hitqcts, Since I then he has been engaged on the SinI gapore naval base.- lie- has visited the base.freaueut.ly, his. longest stay ihere being eleven months. Mr Calder refused to -comment on the work at Singapore except to say, "If ever there was a naval base built purely for defensive purposes the Singapore base is it.”
