STRATFORD SCHOOL.

Headmaster’s Report. Reporting to the monthly meeting of the Stratford School Committee last night, the Headmaster (Mr L. J. Furrie) stated: The school re-opened after the long vacation and the_ majority 'of the pupils seemed glad to get back to the regular routine once again. The opening roll was 504, and the attendance was 489, with an average of 488 for the week.

The only staff changes were that ! Miss Marjorie Foley and Mr Roy j Bamford, from Auckland Training College, replaced Misses Hardy-Jones .■ and M. Skoglund, additional assist- i mts last year. Miss Martin, special j class assistant, relinquished work at ! the end of the year owing to the dis- I establishment of the special class , through lack of pupils. The attendance has been exception- ! good since the re-opening, the t average number absent being only 15. ■' The oiling of the floors of the in- ’ fant building has proved of great benefit. No dust is now in evidence even when the floors are being swept, j besides showing a saving in time. I The new bicycle shelter erected i during the holiday period has been of • considerable use, especially for the I small people’s tricycles. The janitor*' made a good job of the shelter. A subsidence! in the front sealing I of the ground needs attention, as the i water lodges in this part. The site ' of the sinking is where the mqital i surfacing had originally subsided and Evidently the ground below is not sufficiently consolidated, or it may be that either a large stump is rotting or an old sump had been made at the spot.

Following a discussion on the latter subject, the committee resolved that the visiting committee for next month (Messrs W. Davis and Boyce) present a report to the next meeting. The condition of the school baths and the steps taken to repair the leakage were discussed in committee. It was stated that the work done since the last meeting had not been effective. As the baths' will be filled and used by a party of visitors at Eastier, it was decided to defer consideration until next meeting. It was agreed to have the chairs in the teachers’ room painted. The next meeting of the committee

will be the annual meeting, notice of which will be advertised by the Education Board. The hope was expressed by one member present that there would be more than ten householders present at the annual meeting, which was the number who. attended last year. Members present at the meeting were Messrs J. Morrison (chaiman), H. W. Boyce, R. Watson, A. Ferguson, W. Davis, H. F. Vo. c seller, Mrs P. Thomson, Mrs J. Pecrie, L. J. Furrie (headmaster), and G. A. Carter (secretary).
