DANGEROUS BRIDGE Deputation to Council Meeting. The monthly meeting of the Stratford County Council was held to-day. Present were: Councillors T. R. Anderson (chairman), J. C. Best, C. Skitrop, B. Hutchen, G. Jensen, W. H. Were, L. Stanford, W. Vickers, and S*. Pitt. Messrs. W. E. Forbes and W. J. Jackson waited upon the council in regard to the condition of the steel bridge over the Makino stream at Stanley Road. The decking, Mr. Forbes said, was badly worn. The approaches were of a dangerous nature, and several bad bends were a source of worry to parents sending children on ponies to school. The chairman said the engineer had had the re-decking in view, and he promised that the council would seriously consider the question of improvements to the approaches and the road generally. The dangerous nature of the railway crossing on the Ahuroa road was brought under the council’s notice in a communication from the Toko branch of the Farmers’ Union. The council decided to send forward the request to the Railway Department. In the meantime the engineer was asked to report on the crossing.
The medical officer of health, Wellington, wrote in reference to contributions by local authorities for Health Inspector’s services. He referred to a circular letter of September 22, 1932, j in which the council was advised that' the department had acceded to a re-J quest from representatives of local' authorities to reduce the contributions! towards the salaries and expenses t*f I departmental health inspectors by 10 • per cent, as from April 1, 1932, and ’ stated that in view of the fact that ’ all “cuts” had been restored as from ! July 1, 1936, it had been decided to I Increase the council’s contribution for. the service by 10 per cent, as from that ‘ date. The council’s annual contribu-j tion would be £97/15/-. I Permission to lay pipe» to connect j with the borough water supply was* granted to C. H. Clemow, Opunake • Road. During the past month 87 cubic: yards of Waiwiri road pit shingle had i been carted and spread on the Palmer road from the Duthie road south, re-j ported the engineer, Mr. J. W. Spence, | in reference to work done in hte West i Riding. Three-quarters of a mile of > the Cardiff road had been coated with | tar and blinded with screened pit shingle. In the East Riding the I Toko road, from Toko to the Raupuha j road, also 30 chains of the latter, had I been coated with road oil and washed shingle,
