MISHAP TO LORRY

BRIDGE STRUCK. Vehicle Resting on Wooden Stringer After striking a wooden bridge beyond the Midhirst township this morning, a motor lorry owned by the Highways Transport Company mounted a wooden stringer and came to rest. The sight of the vehicle in this unique position attracted considerable attention before it was removed by a service truck. The driver, Mr D. J. Lucas, of Wanganui, had a remarkable escape, as there Was a urop of -lover 40 feet to deep •■water immediately below. 'Dhe lorry, which was carrying about three tons of mixed godus, was proceeding from Wanganui to New Plymouth and when approaching the bridge the driver observed a car coming towards him. On. pulling over the lorry struck a pot hole and apparently broke a spring shackle with the result that the steering became useless. The lorry- swerved and climbed right up the stringer on the left side of the bridge. The radiator was damaged and a mudguard torn off. Traffic across the bridge was not obstructed by -the position of the lorry.
