“POOR FEEDERS”
Fodder Consciousness It has been said that Australians are “good breeders but poor feeders.” By this is meant that they are particular in the choiee of the sires they use to increase the annual numbers, but are not too conscientious in feeding the mothers and their off-spring. The quotation is far too broad. It would be more precise to say that the grazier likes a good ram; but the number of scrub bulls and imperfect stallions in use throughout the country precludes any generalisation. Inhere are, however, indications that Australians are at the dawn of fodder consciousness. It is going to be a very lont* dawn. Possibly the day will not break until a vigorous policy of closer settlement forces men to husband their land and stock resources then, perhaps, the more intimate methods of animal management will stimulate a regard for the safety of the stock no* entirely on £. 0, d.
