TESTING VEHICLES.
Eventually To Be Undertaken By State.
Press. Association—Copyright. Auckland, To-day. | An intimation has been received by I the Auckland City Council from the ! Minister of Transport, the Hon. R. ; Semple, that at the expiration of two years the council will be appointed the sole authority to test vehicles under the traffic regulations for the city area. The Government, however, will retain the right to examine any vehicle where it is thought desirable. A statement to this effect was made yesterday by the chairman of the legal and by-laws committee of the council, Mr. W. T. Anderton. M.P. He explained that the position was little changed from that reported to the last meeting of the council, and pending facilities being provided by city and State authorities for the testing of vehicles, the testing would be carried out under a satisfactory arrangement made with the New Zealand Garage Proprietors’ Association. There was no question as to the inI tention of the Government, however, added Mr. Anderton, and inspections eventually would be carried out by State and city authorities. The reason why the latter were not undertaking the work immediately was because of the magnitude of the task of getting proper and correct machinery for the purpose of efficiently testing vehicles. The public could depend on it, however, that the City Council would be rhe testing authority in due couree for the city area at least*
