Congress May Override Court’s Decisions
Press Association —Copyright. Washington, March 3.
The efforts* of all factions of Congress to effect a compromise regarding President Roosevelt’s Supreme Court reform proposals and his increasingly apparent abandoning of his earlier Republican strategy, has let Democratic opponents’ proposals take the lead. Senator Vandenberg, in an address, endorsed the WheelerBone amendment to permit Congress to override the Supreme Court invalidation of laws passed by the Congress. The famour Bill of Rights’ is excepted from the purview of the amendment.
The way 'Was paved for Senator Vandenberg’s endorsement speech the day before when Senator Wheeler said he was willing to except the Bill Of Rights. Mr. Summers-., indicating the desire of both sides for a compromise, spoke on the floor of the House of Representatives, urging the patriotic duty of elderly justices to retire voluntarily in favour of younger men. He stated they could retire without shame, knowing that they were performing a service to the country in co-operating with the Government.
