LIME WORKS FIRE.

Serious Damage To Gordon

Road Plant.

Half the building and nearly all the plant were destroyed by a fire at the lime works at Gordon Road, Toko, in

the early hours of yesterday morning. A total of 12,000 bags of lime was damaged and rendered unfit for use, but a further 20,000 bags wsre not affected.

The fire was discovered aftout 3 a.m. by Mr C. McKinstry, Ltationmaster at Te Wera, and a bucket brigade was formed by mill and quarry workers. Mr McKinstry telephoned Messrs R. R. Curtis, and T. Lawson, junr., at Stra.tford, and they went to the scene with chemical extinguishers. These used in conjunction with swamp water, enabled the fire to be got under control by about 6 a m. It is thought that, the fire broke out on top of the coal furnace used In burning the lime.

Mr A. G. Cummins, of Wellington, managing director dt Lime Sales and Distribution Ltd., went fb Gordon Road yesterday, and after operations, returned to Wanganui. It is reported that the building ai/l plant were insured with Lloyds, but particulars are not available.
