Geld Digger No. 1. Out of the entire cast of “Gold Diggers of Broadway,” which WarnerBros. released six years ago as the first in a series' of “Gold Diggers” musical productions, a dancing chorine nt?.med Dorothy O’Connell i? tho only survivor who app< ars in Warner * Bros., First National’s 1937. edition. This discovery was made when dance director Busby Berkeley began try-out rehearsals for his dancing girls in the new picture. “How many of you worked with me in ‘Gold Diggers of 1935’?” he asked as the girls lined up before him. Twenty-five girls raised their hands and stepped forward. Berkeley looked over the group and then aiked, “How many of you worked in ‘Gold Diggers of 1933’?” Eleven girls raised their hands this time. Out of curiosity Berkeley then asked, “Is there anyone here who worked in the original musical back in 1930?” This time Mits O’Connell was the only one to raise her hand. She had raised it each time Berkeley had asked the question. Colberts’ New Roie. Warner Bros, seven picturisation of one of the smash hit plays of the season, “Tovarich," by Jacques Deval will have Claudette Colbert in the leading feminine role, according to word from the studios. Miss Colbert read the. script of the play and was enthusiastic about the possibilities of the film comedy-drama, which is expected to go into production at the Warner studios in Burbank, California. soon after the first of the year. Miss Colbert will play the role created by Marta Abba famous; Italian ae’ress. on the New York stjge and by Loontovich in London. A stellar i cast is now being assembled for the I ret 1 picture.
Carole Lombard. The dresses Carole Lombard Will wear in “Swing High, Swing Low,’ are full of advance tips on Travis Banton’s conception of what the welldressed woman should plan to wear during the coming season. The skirts of Carole’s frocks, for instance, are at least 14 or 15 inches from the floor. Sleeves are either four inches above the wrist or are short, square sleeves without any obvious illusion of breadth.
New Star. < Definite word that Donald Woods will play the lead in the now Erie Stanley Gardn r mysitery, “The Case of the Stuttering Bishop” has been received from the Warner Bros, studios in Burbank, California.
Ricardo Cortez Wa& initially scheduled to play the part of the lawyerdet ctive, Perry Mason, but he has withdrawn from the cast to take a,n important role in “The Go-getter.” Ann Dvorak will have the part of Della Street in the new Gardner picture. The film will be directed by William Clemens.
“Slim.” The coveted leading feminine, role in “Slim,” Warner Bros., First National’s drama of the courageous high-tension \yire linesmen, has been given to Margaret Lindsay, according to word from the studios'. Pat O’Brien and Henry Fonda are starred in the production, v'ith other members of the cast including Stuart Erwin. J. Farrell McDonald and John Litel. Raymond Enright is directing “Slim.” which is being filmed from the novel and screen play by William Wister Haines.
Cast Additions. Una O’Connor and Beryl Mercer have been added to the cast of “Call It a Day,” which has just started pro? duction, according to word from the Warner Bros, studios at Burbank, California. Miss' O’Connor will be remembered for her work in “Cavalcade,” while Miss Mercer won distinction in “The Old Lady Shows Her Medals.” Olivia de Havilland is the star of the new picture, which is adapted from the famous stage play by Do-die Smith. lan Hunter has the leading masculine role, and other members' of the cast include Frieda Infescorit, Frank Haines, and Bonita Granville. Archie L. Mayo is directing the production.
