A number of important decisions concerning- the grading of pos't-An-i--mary schools and free places at these schools were revealed by the Minister of Education, the Hon. Peter Fraser, in an interview to-day.

Usually the grading of secondary, technical and combined schools and the secondary department of district high schools and intermediate schools are deterrtiined by the roll numlberjs. on March 1, but this year March 15 will be substituted for the usual date, except in the case ot schools opening later than March 1, these being graded 14 days after the respective opening dates. In case the grading of schools is affected adversely through pupils ■ finding positions owing to the delay in opening such schools no general relaxation of the staffing regulations will be made, each ease being considered on its merits.

It has been decided to continue concessions that have been granted tq fee-paying pupils in all types of Government .pottjprimary schools. Approval is also given of the extension of junior free places for an additional year in the case of those pupils who failed tb secure senior free places in 1936, also of the extension of senior free places l beyond the end of the year in which the holders attain ithe age of 19 years, provided in both cases that parents are unable to provide the necessary fees for tuition of the child after .the expiry of the free place.
