BOWLING.
The Shield competitions were continued on Saturday, but as Eltham forfeited to Avon, only matches with Stratford, Inglewood and Tariki were [played, Stratford B were too good for Tariki, and each rink had a comfortable win. In the Ewing-Newton game it was a close tussle until the last few head's, when Ewing’s team forged ahead winning 30 —18. Carrington and Butcher ware drawing •well whilst Ewing was in good form. Williams met Rumball who gained an early lead and piled on points, at one stage leading by 25 —3. McMillan played splendid bowls, whilst Irving and Rowell gave a good display and outplayed their rivals. Williams gave Rumball no chance, eventually emerging victorious by 33 —13. Davis’ team overwhelmed Summers, Who never appeared to be dangerous. Porritt was leading well whilst Turnbull and Boyd were very consistent and -outplayed their opponents. * * *
. - -Stratford A had an easy victory , over Inglewood, the final scores being 85 —56. Amest had a “runaway” win over Hook whose team found the • green too fasti. Heggie Was outstanding as lead, whilst Feek and Furrie gave strong support. * * * A good game ensued between Clark and Mason and perhaps Clark was ; lucky not to be beaten, at Mason played splendid bowls throughout, . his drawing shots being a feature, the game ending 19 all. : * * * McDonald just beat Rosewarne by 4 points, both teams giving a good display, Franklin was solid as lead and Healy was.' always handy. Jones was not a's consistent as he usually is, his rival Curtis, outplayed him. McDonald however, saved his side several times, by well drawn shots, otherwise the result may have been different. * * * On Saturday fhe semi-final game with Park (HaWera) is to be played on the Stratford green. Bot hclubs have entered strong rinks, and a keen struggle should be witnessed. It would occasion no surprise should Stratford emerge victorious, although the Park club are recognised as being very strong, and have on many occasions fought their way 'to the iflnals. ** - * The postponed one-day tournament at Stratford is to take place on March 17. * * * The Avon club are staging a oneday tourney on Saturday, March 6, and they are assured of good support. Given a fine day the fixture should be very successful. Entries close on Tuesday next with the secretary, Mr W. Dwyer. * * * Last week-end the Diggers annual tournament was held on the Stratford and Avon greens, and one and all voted it as a huge success. The day Was perfect, good bowls were witnessed and the entries were a record. Much credit is due to Col. L. Pope and his “orderlies” for the manner in which every detail was carried out.
