NEW ZEALAND CRICKET

Review of Dominion’s New Team. The following is a brief description of the men chosen for the New Zealand cricket team to tour England (asterisk denotes former Dominion representatives):— Auckland. •H. G. Vivian (24): Brilliant allrounder; recognised as one of New Zealand's finest cricketers. ♦W. M. Wallace (20): Most attractive batsman, with a good variety of scoring shots; a splendid field; represented North Island in 1935, and made a century against M.C.C. at Eden Park exactly a year ago. W. N. Carson (20): With Wallace, the Dominion’s leading batsman; a rapid scoring left-hander with an average of 125 in Plunket Shield cricket; a good field and useful change bowler. *G. l_ W«lr (28): An all-round player; very solid bat; change bowler; a moderate fieldsman. ♦J. Cowie (34); Fast bowler, who heads the averages in Plunket Shield matches this season; fielding not np to standard. Canterbury. •M. L. Page (34); Captain of sidej all-round player, who has made good after having been out of big cricket for most of last season, and not meeting with much success since his last return from

England. •A. W, Roberts (28): Another fine all-round player; likely to prove the stock bowler of the team. Average 120 with bat this season. •W, A. Hadlee (24): One of the Dominion’s mo ft. brilliant and consistent young batsmen. Not a good fielder. •J. L. Kerr (26): Sound batsman; former winner of Redpath Cup. Scored 655 runs in first-class cricket last season, but only 74 in five innings this summer. Only fair in field. Wellington. E. W. Tlndlll (26): Only wicketkeeper chosen, good one; also a batsman of more than average ability, having three Plunket Shield centuries to his credit. •O. A. R. Moloney (26): Manawatu Hawke Cup representative, formerly of Otago; sound bat; also able to bowl slow. *B. Griffiths (26): Slow right-hand bowler; has poor performances' in recent Inter-provincial cricket. His three for 45, and six for 55 in second innings against M.C.C. and Canterbury last year clinched two victories for Wellington. Big bitter. M. P. DonnOfly (19): Colt from Taranaki, where he had a series of good batting performances; played his first Plunket Shield match against Auckland at Eden Park recently; earned great prafte for his fielding and throwing-in. The real surprise selection, the reason for which may be due to Page’s strictures on “terrible New Zealand fielding.”

Otago. *J. A. Dunning (33): Former Auckland representative; stock bowler, who occasionally makes rune Played for New Zealand (two for 156) when W. R. Hammond made his record Test score of 336, not out, aX Eden Park, on April 11, 1933. Another whose fielding leaves something to be desired. Page, Kerr, Hadlee, Roberts, Vivian, Wallace, Carson and Moloney ■were selected on February 11, and the team was completed on Wednesday night with the following six: Coble, Weir, Tfadill, Griffiths, Donnelly, Dunning. The New Zealand team will sail from Wellington on March 27. and will play 37 matches, including some in Scotland and Wales. The dates' of Tests are:— June 26, 28, 29: At Lord’s. July 24, 26, 27: At Manchester. August 14, 16, 17: AX the Oval. Of the 1937 team Page is the only actual player who accompanied the 1927 side on its pioneer tour of the Old Country; while Kerr, Vivian and Weir accompanied Page when he went Home again in 1931. Dowry was captain on both occasions, and manager in the second year. Mr Douglas Hay was manager 10 year: ago. The 1937 New Zealand selectors are: Messrs H. B. Whitta (Canterbury, chairman), N. C. Snedden (Auckland), J. McMullan (Otago), and A W. Duncan (Wellington). -t
