“Romeo” Roosevelt To Wed His “Juliet”
PRESIDENT’S SON AND DAUGHTER OF BITTEREST OPPONENT The engagement of President Roosevelt’s third son, Mr Franklin Roosevelt, jun., to Miss Ethel Du Pont, the daughter of the President’s keenest “big business” opponent, is announced. The American Press does not hesitate to describe the engagement as a “Montagu-Capulet” romance, because of all American industrialists there are none so bitterly opposed to President Roosevelt’s policies as the Du Ponts. The young couple have often been seen together at undergraduate parties in recent months, and their engagement has been rumoured for some time. It was considered advisable to postpone announcement of the betrothal until after the Presidential election. Miss Ethel Du Font’s father is Mr. Eugene Du Pont, millionaire member of a family of powerful industrialists and manufacturers of explosives. The Du Ponts bitterly opposed President Roosevelt’s re-election, and were the mainstays of the ultra-Conservative American Liberty League which campaigned against the President for months. Many people thought that the political animosity of the two families would interfere with the romance.
