I As the result of a decision reached ■ at a special meeting last Friday, j Amalgamated Dairies, Limited, is to i be wound up voluntarily, thus ending ! activities which have been carried on i for the last 10 years for the purpose i of marketing New Zealand dairy pro- | uuce in England. | The company was established in i 1927 with a view to regulating sup- | plies of dairy produce on the Lon- , don market and to selling produce at , the best available prices against ! organised buying. It was set up by ■ the Nev' Zealand Co-operative Dairy I Company, Limited, after compulsory ! dairy control had failed, in order to I bring about a practical realisation of i orderly marketing so far as the proI duce of the New Zealand Co-operative ; Dairy Company, and of any other ' dairy company that cared to come I into the scheme, was concerned. The ; arrangement between the two comI panies l was a service one, having for , its object the furtherance of the ini terests of -the producers. ! When interviewed on Friday, Mr I William Goodfellow, managing direcI tor of Amalgamated Dairies, Limited, i stated that, owing to the GovernI ment purchase of all butter and : cheese exported., the old company 1 v-'as being liquidated, and a new com- ■ pany, with the same directors; had j been formed for the purpose ot j carrying on the marketing of New i Zealand dairy produce overseas. ! Amalgamated Dairies, apart from conI trolling the general policy of the ■ United Kingdom business, also mar- ■ keted dairy produce for the New Zeaj land Government on a commission I basis throughout the Orient, Pacific I and Central America, “The Amal- , gamated Dairies,” said Mr Goodi fellow, “were experiencing no diffil culty in complying with the require- | ments of the Government, both here I and in London.” I Amalgamated Dairies held a5O per cent, interest in Empire Dairies, Limited, which, in addition to the produce of other Empire countries, was- nov,< marketing in the United Kingdom the bulk of the butter and cheese allocated -to Amalgamated Dairies by the New Zealand Government Marketing Department. The turnover of Empire Dairies now exceeded £6,000,000 sterling p/r annum.
