TARANAKI MEETING

Stratford Lose District Banner.

The Stratford Athletic Chib failed to hold the Taranaki banner at the sub-centre championships at New Plymouth on Saturday. New Plymouth, with 113 points, was easily top club. Stratford, with 51 points, finish ed sdcond, equal with Hawera. Although less prominent than us ual in the meeting as a whole, Stratford fully maintained its reputation as the leading field events club in Taranaki. S. A. Lay easily held his Taranaki title in the javelin throw. His throw of 186 ft OJins. was 3ft 4Jin. better than his previous best per fonmance in a Taranaki meeting and 6ft 6Jin better than his own Tara aki record of 179 ft 6in. W. Ireland, Stratford, whose recent performances Was certain to win fhe high jump and to establish a new Taranaki record, failed unaccountably and was second in this event with a jump of sft 4Jin. The event was won by R. Bloor (E) with a jump of sft sin, two inches lets than Ireland's jump when he Won the event at the Stratford meeting on Tuesday night. Ireland won the broad jump with 20ft Bin (record 22ft 7 7-Bins), and had the misfortune to fracture his ankle in this event. Previous to this he was second in the discus throw, second in the pole-vault and third in the hammer throw. A. Kofoed, Stratford, won the discus event with a throw of IOSCt. lin (the record held by L. Hunt, Hawera, is 125 ft, and S. A. Lay won the event Igst year with 100 ft lliins.), and also the shot putt. In the latter event, with a putt of 34ft 6in., he defeated F. Bocock (S), who last year won the title with a putt of 36ft lOin. which is Jin. lets than the Taranaki record of A. D. Adlam. D. Thomson, Stratford, was third in the javelin event with a throw of 136 ft 6in. M. J. Lynch, Stratford, won the 120 yards hurdles event in a time of 17 15secs, lowering the time of last year’s winner, C. P. D. Rogers, by 1-5 second. He war. second to A. Inness (N.P.) in the 220yds low hurdles event. Miss M. Knox, Stratford, lost her Taranaki title in the women’s 100yds event, beipg defeated in the final b.v Miss N. Smith (Hawera). Miss Smith’s time of 12 l-ssecs. was l-ssec better than that made by Miss Knox at last year's meeting. The Stratford junior, L. Beale, ran well to gain third place in the 100 yards junior championship and D Old, Stratford, was third in the mile walk in a close finish. W. Ludlam, Stratford, won the halfmile cycle race in gppd style. His time t)f 75 l-ssecs., was 1 3-ssecs,'. better than that put up by M. Green. Hawera, who won the title last year, and was made on a much more difficult track. A. Adams, Stratford, was third in the three mile cycle, which was Won by M. Green in Bmin 29 4-5 secs. West Coast Meeting. Three Stratford athletes have been selected for the Taranaki team to take part in the West Coast (N. 1. championships at Levin, next Saturday. S. A. Lay is entered for the javelin, discus and hammer throw events, A. Kofoed for the discus and shot-putt and F. Bocock for the shotputt. .
