WANGANUI WINS
BAND CONTEST A GRADE TEST. ' Beats Woolston by Five Points. Press Association—Copyright. Nelson, Last Night. The; gold challenge cup for the champion New Zealand A grade band was- won by the Wanganui Garrison Band as a result of its winning the second test to-night .vith 10 points in hand. Mr. Pailister, president cf -.he Brass Bauds Associatim, ii> congraiuiating the winners, said all bandsmen would be gratified to see the one-time champions to the fore again. They had suffered reverses but had ris.n to the top a£ain in a creditable minner. He congratulated the conductor and the bandsmen on their performance. The judge, Mr. Kerry, said he had been impressed by the A grade performances 4>n both nights. The standard to-night was not quite up to the performance in the first test, but the winning band, from a rhythmical and detail viewpoint, was outstanding. The soloists, especially the soprano euphonium and the cornet, were most impressive. The work and perform ance of the- bands in general was o( a fairly high A grade standard. The results are:, — Wanganui Garrison, first test 136 points, second 133 points; total 269. Woolston, 141, 123; 264. Timaru Municipal, 125, 129; 254. St. Kilda, 121, 125; 246. Palmerston North Garrison 113, 116; 229. Queen Alexandra’s Own, 115, 98; 213. Nelson Garrison, 110, 103; 213.
