At the outbreak of the Great War he was sent to the Dardan Iles where he was promoted to the rank of Major-General. He served in Egypt in 1916 and in France until the end of the war. From January 1918, he Was Chief of Staff a.t the Headquarters of the British Armies in France and promoted to Lieutenant-General. In 1919 he was promoted to General.
