Stratford Summer Flower Show
SPLENDID EXHIBITS SEEN TO-DAY
LARGE ENTRIES AND KEEN COMPETITION IN ALL ALL CLASSES.
With entries' well up on those of previous years, particularly in the flower sections, the Stratford Horticultural Society’s Summer show, which is being held at the Town Hall to-day, presents an impressive spectacle.
Exhibits have been received from as far as New Plj'mouth in the north, and’ Hawera in the south, and there are in addition, stalls of prize blooms shown by professional florists. Keen interest has been taken by the district branches of the W.D.F.U. in the special competition arranged for their members.
The prize-bloom in the dahlia section, which was judged this morning, was the yellow and orange, Daily Mail variety, entered by Dr. Doris' Gordon, Stratford. Commenting on the entries in this section, the judge, Mr. A. J. Shailej, Palmerston North, said that though some of the blooms had been affected by rough weather, tile standard and number of entries was excellent.
The bulk of the entries 1 in the vegetable section come from the Stratford Hospital garden and are of exceptionally high quality. In opening the show Mr. W. J. Polson M. P., said he was amazed at the excellence of the exhibits consider ing the abnormal conditions of the season. He congratulated the society and the exhibitors on maintaining such a high standard. One point he wanted to stress, was the need in Taranaki to take some steps',for adding to the natural beauty of the road and parts of the countryside. A beau tifying society could do splendid work in this connection and he commended the idea to those interested.
