The determination of Britain to put her defences on a sound footing is disclosed in the White Paper issv d on Tuesday concern* ing defence expenditure. Approximately "1,500,000,000 is contemplated being spent during the next five years. Britain, therefore, enters the armament race of Europe, but, as the Secretary for War said, in a cablegram yesterday, she was arming to promote peace, for the British Empire had no greater interest. All sections of the defence forces are to be revitalised by the expenditure of huge sums. Three Jiew capital ships, seven cruisers and two aircraft-carriers are planned for the Navy. Men and machines will be added to the Royal Air Force, and coast defences at home will be strengthened by the provision of more efficient anti-aircraft measures.
