TURF NOTES IN BRIEF.
All three places in Thursday’s Egfmont Cup were filled by horses claiming an Australian-bred sire. Taitoru and One Whetu are by Sancktar and Hazoor is by Black Ronald. -x- * * Sansfoy, treble winner recently in Taranaki, is the first and only horse yet raced by Mrs G. E. Wood, of Wellington, who took over the gelding early in the season. It was understood some time ago that Midian had been retired to the stud, but he is apparently in work again, for he figures among the entrants for the Woodville meeting. This Weathervane horse is not past further race success yet, as he is now only six years old. ~ -x- v? Nightform has made a reappearance on the Washdyke tracks under the supervision of P. T. Hogan. The jumper Aladdin is another recent addition to the stable, but it must always bp doubtful if he will stand up to a further preparation. *’ * * Queen of Song is reported from south to be unlikely to make another trip to Australia this season, and it is understood that she ife to be scratched for the Australian Cup. ■X- -X- -XOmaha and his younger fullbrother Flares have been entered for this year’s Ascot Gold Cup. The American owner Mr W. Woodward has- also engaged his English-bred St. Leger winner Boswell.
Rhodesian, whp figures among the entrants for the two-year-old race on the final day at Woodville, is a' bay colt by Vaals from the Catmint— ! Whitford Belle mare Mint Belle, and i he is owned by his breeder, Mr A. E. Patrick, of Taihape. * f ‘X- -XThe Ellerslie trainer, A. Kemp, has added to his team a chestnut gelding by Whirlwind from the Salvadan mare who produced Glendowie. Th’b newcomer is a solid-looking sort, but it will be some time before he is ready to race. * * * Taitoru, winner of Thursday’s Egmont Cup, was secured from h\s breeder (Mr P. Tito) by his present, owner, Mr E. G. Baylis, of Opunake, only early in the present season. In Mr Baylis’ colours he has won five times and been second five times in | 13 starts, and he has earned £ll4O - in stakes. * "X- -tv -XDefaulter the name that has been selected by Mi- H. D. Green wood for the Defoe—Expense colt he purchased at the sales last month. Expense is a half-sister by Paper Money to Scion, -winner of the New Zealand and Auckland Cups, to ( the colt is bred to be good. * * * A two-year-old full-sister to Flood Tide, named Miss Lovelock, is at present being worked at Takanint and she will race in the same interests. It jvill be interesting to. see whether she is another Flood Tide or just a Mai de Mer. * * * At the recent Wellington meeting there was a surprising lot of money for Gironde in the Trial Plate, and though he failed he .may be worth remembering if produced in maiden class next week at Woodville. He is a year older full-brother to Ben Braggie and he carries the colour?, of his breeder, Mr T. White, of Hastings. In his only start this season prior to Trentliam he ran second, though a poor one, to Jazz Boy at Hastings at the Newt Year. Solario’s Companions. After having been in the north for several months with Solaria, the former Hastings owner-breeder Mi- M. Lane apparently contemplates returning for the circuit of southern North Island meetings during the autumn, for he is now entering his horses in these parts. Solaria is the only name that, will be recognised in the Woodville - list, but there are two maidens as well who will race in the same colours, Colleen Gain and River Feale. Colleen Gain and River Feale neither of whom has yet started in a race, are full-relatives to each other and half-relatives to the Hyimestra mare Abbey Feale, Who is not at present in commission. Colleen Gain is a five-year-old baymare by Gainscourt (sire also O f Solaria) out of the Formative j Queen’s Maid mare Queenly, and I River Feale is a four-year-old brown I or black gelding of the same breedI ing. River Feale owes his name apj patently to the original stud return's j showing- Tidal as the sire, but the return has since been corrected. Both horse's are engaged in maiden and hack events at Woodville.
