AMALGAMATION.

Local Body Delegates Not In

Favour.

Delegates from the Stratford and Whangamomona Counties, and the Stratford borough met at Stratford yesterday to discuss amalgamation proposals. The meeting was. held in committee and afterwards the following were released. (1) That in the opinion of the meeting it is not desirable that the Stratford borough should be amalgamated with the counties.

(2) That, while supporting the principle of amalgamation where befieficial, this meeting does not consider the amalgamation of Stratford and countlies would be of real benefit to either, and would recommend as an alternative the amalgamation of such backblock areas as have similar valuation's and

community of interest, such counties and parts of counties to be classified and to be given further Government assistance by way of subsidy.

Those present were Mr W. J. Poison, M.P., Mr J. W. McMillan (Mayor of Stratford), and Crs. T. R. Anderson, H. C. Taylor (Stratford county), N. R. Cleland, J- D. Law (Whangamomona county), and C. R. Finnerty (Stratford borough).
