JAPANESE SHIP.
DRIFTING HELPLESSLY. Other Vessels Hurrying To Assistance. Press Association—Copyright. Received noon. Brisbane, To-day. SOS calls have been received from the steamer Shouting, 4920 tons, which is believed to be drifting helplessly with a broken rudder in a cyclone, 700 or SOO miles east of Cairns. It is believed to be north of Bampton Reef, beyond Willis Island. Several vessels, Including the steamer Nellor and China Exporter, are hurrying to its assistance.
The Shousing is bound from Ocean Island to Melbourne, carrying a full cargo of phosphates. The vessel has a Chinese crew of 40 and Japanese officers. It is commanded by Captain Kasalo. The Shousing was formerly known as the Pauline, the Oaylina, the Strabaand, and the Bright Vega. It is owned by Japanese interests in China, and the present agent for the vessel is the British Phosphate Commission.
