A LUCKY ESCAPE.

Washed Overboard But Held On To Rail. Press Association—Copyright. Wellington, Last "Night. To be swept from the deck of the Matangi and to clutch successfully at the rail as he went overboard was the experience of Mr R. A. Shearer, a compositor, aged 27, of Island Bay, when the vessel was crossing Cook Strait on Saturday.

Mr Shearer was ou the lower after deck and was walking from one side to the other when the vessel gave a sudden lurch which sent him sliding on the wet deck. His shin struck a raft seat and he went hurtling over the side of the vessel. Luckily he had the presence of mind to grasp one of the lower iron railings. He was thus saved from headlong flight to the heavy sea, from which rescue under the conditions would have been impossible.
