SHIPBUILDING COSTS.
Merchant Tonnage Increasing In Price. Press Association—Copyright. Received 10.30 a.m. London, Feb. 13. Hector Mywater, the navy correspondent of the Daily Telegraph, says that the'mounting costs of steel are sending up the price of merchant tonnage. Standard types of cargo ships' are now 30 per cent, higher than they were last year, while liners are 35 to 40 per cent higher. There is every indication that the rise has not yet reached its peak. The large volume of Admiralty work is contributing to increase costs and skilled labour is short. Most ship-yards are fully occupied.
