ATHLETICS.
Th© discus event at the Stratford club night this. week way well patronised but although there v’ere several quite good efforts, Stan. Lay, who is now getting into form for the New Zealand meeting, was the only one to reach anywhere near championship form. Kofoed appeared to be off form but he can be expected to better the 100 feet at the Taranaki championships. Bowler, who shows considerable promite, and Ireland are two useful men in this section.
, Bocock, who won the shot putt easily enough with his. 1 fourth effort could be a first-class performer in this event if he could secure expert coaching to make his style a little less rugged. Thomson, the most promising younger athlete in this event, was the only competitor up to form, Kofoed and Bowler both being below form.
The initial appearance for the club of the ex-Taranaki 100 yards' champion, J. Sullivan was the chief point of interest in the sprint events. Sullivan showed that he is still very fast, Well ahead of any other Stratford sprinter, but although he won the 100 yards without trouble he d~ nbt seem to be trained up to his best form.
O. Mander, an outstanding junior distance runner, was unaccountably out of sorts. He appeared to have the half-jmile well in hand when 150 yards from home but he failed badly, allowing E. Cuff, who finished very fast, to win in good style.
M. Lynch has noW mastered the technique of hurdling and appears to be a distinct possibility for the Taranaki title in this event.
