Full Inquiry Promised By
Minister.
Press Association—Copyright. Sydney, February 11. Reports of discontent in the Australian Navy have been prevalent lately. Ratings complain that many of their former privileges are disappearing and that irksome conditions have been introduced.
“A full Inquiry into the grievances of ratings of the Australian Navy is now going on,” declared the Defence Minister, Sir Archdale Parkhill, to-day. He added that he was not prepared to admit that there was serious disaffection.
Some men complain that in addition to the withdrawal of many privileges, the penalties for minor breaches of discipline are out of all proportion to their seriousness. There is also discontent regarding dress regulations.
Acts of sabotage since January 17 include the throwing of a cable jack, chainhooks, hatchings and branchpipes over the side of the cruiser Australia, the cutting of gun circuit wires, the cutting of telephone cables to the engine, boiler and dynamo rooms, and the spraying of acid on the gunhouse of B turret. Wilful destruction of stores was reported as long ago as August.
