STRICTER DISCIPLINE AND LOSS OF PRIVILEGES.
PENALTIES FOR BRECHES OUT OF ALL PROPORTION TO OFFENCES.
WILFUL DAMAGE OCCURRED FOR PAST MONTH.
Although in Sydney rumours have been common that discontent among the ratings of the Australian Navy is widespread, little publicity has been given about it. Yesterday’s cablegram, however, has brought the matter to a head, and the Federal Minister of Defence, Sir Archdale Parkhill, has admitted in effect that there is disaffection among the men.
The men’s case in the present disturbance was first expressed to the Sydney press on January 30, the day before the departure of the fleet to Jervis Bay, where it has been carrying out annual exercises. At one stage it was thought doubtful whether the vessels would sail, so definite were many of the men that they would not join the ships.
Although serious in themselves, the reported acts of sabotage are generally considered to be militant reprisals rather than attempts to interfere seriously with the efficiency of the navy. Rear-Admiral Lane-Poole denies the allegations generally, and claimed to be unaware of any acts of sabotage recently. His men compared well with the men of the Royal Navy.
