BETTER HOTELS.
West Coasters Urged To Be Up-to-date. The need for the development of a hotel, system along the most up-to-date lines was emphasised by Mr L. J. Schmitt, General Manager of the Tourist Department, when talking to deputations which waited on the Minister of Industries and Commerce (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan) during his tour of South Westland on Saturday (states the “Press”). Mr Schmitt took the opportunity more than once to advise the West Coast people to assist in the development of the tourist industry by providing the best possible hotel accommodation. Tourist traffic was getting to the stage where in numbers the tourists were overtaxing the available accommodation, he said, when speaking at Hokitika on Saturday evening. There Was no fear about getting the tourists to come to the coast, he said, but it was necessary to extend ana improve accommodation for thqm. This' year the increase in the number of tourists visiting the coast was approximately 40 per cent., and it was expected that this development would be accelerated by the advertising campaign being carried out in Australian papers with the idea ot boosting the South Island. Mr Schmitt, when replying to a request for the construction of a road to the Franz Josef Glacier face, said that the authorities were anxious to preserve the present scenic track to the glacier frolm the hostel, but there were possibilities in the construction of a road Ipvter down than the track.
