EAST COAST RAILWAY.
First Passenger Train Running In March. Press Association—Copyright. Wairoa, Feb 14). Another important stage in the construction of the East Coast railway was reached last week when a train was run as far as the Mohaka viaduct, this being the first train to reach the viaduct from the Napier end. It can now be claimed that the whole of the line from Napier to Wafokopu has been practically completed and the only link now required to .make it possible to run a service from Napier to Waikokopu is that Which will be provided by the viaduct. Good progress with the task of siAim-.mg the gorge continues|, and it is fully anticipated that this job, one of the most difficult engineering teats in connection with the railway, will be finished by the end of June. However, no definite indication has yet been given as to when the line will be handed over to the Railways Department, as that will depend a great deal on when the work is far enough advanced to inaugurate a regular train service between Napier and Wairoa. There are several minor works still to be carried out before this will be possible.. There is a possibilitly that the first passenger train will run from Wairoa on March 6, and efforts are being made to have an excursion train run between Waitoa and Raupunga for the Raupunga sports.
