The diplomatic correspondent of th® Manchester Guardian says that the Rebels in Spain are now superior in numbers and much superior in discipline and equipment, thanks to Italian and German aid. The Italians seem the elite of Franco’s corps, and many served in Abyssinia. The largest contingent of foreigners on the Government side is the French, but they are mostly ill-trained volunteers. The Spaniards on both sides seem reluctant to fight, leaving the brunt of the battle to the foreigners. The Italians played the greatest pail in the capture of while the Germans were inclined to stand off.

A Government communique, in addition to alleging that the Italian warships Muzio Artendolo and the Armando Diaz lured the Government fleet from the coast where the revels were operating, deciares that “such latitude on the part of neutral vessels is unprecedented in history. Evidently the Italians planned to eliminate our ships from the battle, reduce their stocks of fuel, and scatter our forces.” The Government also alleges that German and Italian warships were spying out and bombarding the coast under cover of darkness. It is officially announced that some unknown vessel shelled the quays of Barcelona whjle aiming at two oil sFy'ps.
