MARKETING POLICY
CAMPAIGN BEGUN. FOR REFERENDUM. Australian Leaders Commence Campaign. Press Association—Copyright. Sydney, Feb. 9. What has now become known as the Marketing Referendum Campaign, arising out of the Privy Council’s decision last year upsetting the Commonwealth marketing powers, was officially launched at Sydney to-night in a broadcast throughout Australia. The chief speakers were Mr J. A. Lyons, Federal Prime Minister; Dr. Earl Page, Leader of the Country Party; Mr. B. 9. B. Stevens, and Mr E. J. Hogan, Premiers respectively of New South Wales and Victoria. Their arguments were directed to the disabilities occasioned in the rural community by the Privy Council’s decision in the dried fruit case and to the necessity of amendments to the constitution to correct the position. The speakers strongly urged a “Yes” vote to a further request that the -Commonwealth should have complete control over aviation, which hitherto did not exist under the constitution.
Reports are current that in at least two States a negative vote will be recorded. The Labour Party in New South Wales will combat the Commonwealth’s proposals.
