Artificial Breeding.
The breeding of cattle by artificial insemination is being attempted in one or two centres in England. If It should came to be practised on anything like a wide scale it might create an entirely new situation for the breed societies. The Friesian Cattle Society council considered the subject at their December meeting (reports the “Farmer and Stockbreeder”), and came to the conclusion that the experiments and the principle involved should 'be supported. A sub-committee was appointed to prepare detailed regulations and methods' of verification under which the society could consider registration in its Herd Book of entries of the calves born as a re* suit of these approved methods of breeding. Safeguards of a very rigid character would obviously be needed.
