COASTAL SHIPPING. TASMAN CARGOES. “In View Of Increased Costs Now Occurring.” Press Association —Copyright. Wellington, Last Night. Increases in coastal shipping freight rates are being made by the Union Steam Ship Company and other companies engaged in the New Zealand coastal trades to meet, in part, higher operating costs. A circular has been issued, to merchants and other shippers- by the Union Company.
“In view of the increases in wages ashore and afloat now occurring,” the circular states, ‘'we are reluctantly compelled to increase freight rates and we have to advise that, commencing on February 15, New Zealand coastal freight rates will be increased by about 3s a ton and, in addition to this cost, the discharge into railway trucks (at Wellington) will be 2s 6d a ton instead of the present rate of Is.”
The Union Company has also announced that intercolonial freights will be increased by 10 per cent. The new rates will come into force on March 1. The increase will also apply to cargo shipped from South Australian ports for New Zealand.
