ATHLETICS.

(By .“Shot-putt

Starting with the Eltham open meeting on Saturday, opportunities for competition against outside athletes will be numerous for Stratford Athletic and Cycling Club members. * * * Last Stratford club night was the most successful that has been experienced this season and if the weather holds, next Tuesday, the last club night before the Stratford electric light meeting on the 16th, should see even better fields, and even more public interest. * * * The committee of the Stratford chub have decided to accept no entries after the closing date, February 10. This policy was carried out by the New Plymouth club at its last Boxing Day meeting -with entirely satisfactory results. No entries, unaccompanied by nomination fees, and no entries of unregistered athletes, will be accepted. * * The programme for the 16th has been arranged to an chi de in the men’s events a mile walk, 100, 220, 440, 880 yards, and one mile flat races, 120 yards over 3 feet or 3 feet 6 inches hurdles and a relay. For juniors under 18 there will be 100 yards and 880 yards races and for women 75 yards and 100 yards' hurdles. Field events will comprise the shot-putt, discus throw, javelin, and high jump. There will be halfmile, one mile and three mile races for cycles. * * * The layout of the ground has slightly altered this year in order to give spectators a better view of the events. The 100 yards races will be run directly in front of the stand instead of some distance from it as- in former meetings. In addition to giving a better view of the sprint finishes this will enable the field events to be held closer to the stand from where spectators will be in the best possible- position to see them. The flood-lighting arrangements will ensure that there will be no difficulty in seeing each part of every event, the view being quite as good as 1 in broad daylight.
