BOWLING.

(By “Jack.”) The Tarsjnaki open bowling tournament wes successfully concluded on Saturday. The weather throughout the week was ideal ta-nd some splendid bowling was witnessed / The ultimate winner of the tournament was Mr F. /Spurdie’s rink from Inglewood, and it proved a very {popular Win with the bowlers in Taranrpi generally, for Mr .Spurdie 'has taken part in this tournament for over 20 years. His team thoroughly deserved victory as thdy played better bowls than opponents, ia West End rink skipped by Chrisrtofell. * * * The Avon rink, skipped by J. Weston, were unfortunate in not winning some .of their games 1 . They were several times narrowly beaten, often on the last head. * * * We congratulate Dickinson and his team in again reaching post section play. It was generally anticipated they would go close in contesting the finals, for in section play the whole team gave a great display. Cook was leading well, whilst Bulman and Lonsdale were a tower of strength. Dickinson as usual played a sterling game, his drawing being a feature. * * * The Stratford rink skipped by Harris did not meet with the success they deserved and were unlucky on several occasions, and whilst the team played good bowls, luck went against them. * * * The other Stratford rink skipped by Williams were considered unlucky in not reaching post section play and their record of six wins was very creditable. In the game against Spurdie a great battle was witnessed, the scores with one head to play being 14-all. Williams was five up before Spur die drew the winning shot with his last bowl. A keen contest was also seen in the game against Douglass, and although Williams led 15—4 half through the game, was defeated by 21—19. Sum

merfield played very consistently as lead, whilst Butcher and Clark were right on their game and produced tome splendid bowls, Williams was always on “deck” when required and was very accurate* with his ‘‘running shots.”

The shield competition is at present in an interesting stage, Eltham A are leading by one point over Stratford. A. Should Stratford B team beat Eltham on Saturday, both teams will be level and if Stratford A team win against Eltham B they will assume the lead again.

At present it would appear Strat ford are in a strong position and it would no surprise if they won the central division championship this year. * * * Numerous entries from clubs ttirouj/hout Taranaki have already bejen received for the Stratford fclub one-day tournament to be held on Wednesday next. This meeting h»as in /the past proved one of the most popular and most enjoyable bowling events in Taranaki. Rinks may be entered until after the closing day, Monday.
