N.Z. CRICKET.
Manager and Captain Have Good Records. The New Zealand cricket team will be selected in Christchurch after the Canterbury-Otago match. Meanwhile M. L. Page has been appointed captain and T. C. Lowry, manager. It was originally intended to select the New Zealand team for England after the Plunket Shield match with Wellington terminated at Eden Park next week. The southern match had been arranged for the same dates, but recently it was announced that a fortnight’s postponement had been necessitated.
M. L. Page was a member of the 1931 Dominion team in England, when he scored 990 runs in the firstclass games, at an average of 26.75. He compiled four centuries 1 , including 104 in the historic first Test at Lord’s After T. C. Lowry’s retirement Page became the New Zealand leader until lan Crornb superseded him last year, when Page could not strike form. He then played only once for Canterbury, when he scored 19 in each innings against Otago, at Lancaster Park. In 1934-35 Page aggregated only 44 runs in his five innings, in first-class cricket; and in the 1933-34 season, when he was captain of Canterbury in the jubilee match at Auckland, his total in seven innings was- 114 runs, average 16.28. He is also a change, bowler, a fine fieldsman, and is recognised as a good general. The dates of tile three New Zealand Tests in England are: June 26, 28 and 29: At Lord’s. July 24, 26 and 27: At Manchester. August 14, 16 and 17: At the Oval.
