DUNEDIN RACES.

Some Useful Northern Candi-j dates. Judging from the nomination list, j j the Dunedin Jockey Club has material j { for some excellent racing at its ap-j I proaching autumn meeting. J Class is well represented in the; i Dunedin Cup, with Silver Ring, Queen i • of Song, and Argentic to head the | I list, backed up by a couple of good three-year-olds, Wild Chase and Martara. With the exception of Argentic, they all figure in the James Hazlett Gold Cup, in which the crack sprinter, Gold Boa, a rgpid improver this season, is eligible to oppose them. The inclusion of Silver Ring is specially welcome, as evidence that he is all ! right again. He and Queen of Song | were Australian weight-for-age win-I ners in the spring. A meeting between Wild Chase and Martara will arouse much interest. The Riccarton nominations make up a very useful contingent, consist- ' ing of Wild Chase, Paper Slipper. Top Notch, Haughty Winner, Mob Rule, Vintage, Tunneller, Knockfin, Willie Win, Redolent, Gold Label, Fairway, Recollection, Argentic, Screamer, Palmyra, Rousseau, Lu-s--tral, Mercenary, In the Dark, Invoice, Dictate, Royal Order, Epic, Glenavo i, Rebel Chief, Cerne Abbas, Davolo, Concert Pitch, Golden Dart, Happy Night, and Palady. Tarleton. Efforts are being made to secure a return fight between Nel Tarleton (Glasgow) for the British featherweight championship for London. | Wembley anil Earl’s Court have exi pressed interest in the match. Tarlei ton, after his defeat by McGrory, de dared that he was retiring from tbe ring. He has reconsidered his decision, and has issued a £2OO challenge to the Scot.

Good Three-year-old. Martara is the only North Island horse nominated for the Dunedin meeting, but he represents top threeI year-old class. His engagements are the Dunedin Cup and the James Hazlett Gold Cup. In the latter race 1 e has earned the full penalty of 101 b, making his weight 8.13, as he has won more than £lOOO in stakes. In last year’s race there were only three starters, all of which carried the lO’.b penalty, and the result was an easy victory for Silver Ring from Greek Shepherd, with Silver Streak third, the race being run in the record time for the track of 1.38 2-5. Martara's fine form at Trenthain will nq doubt j arouse deep interest in his Dunedin Cup chance, as it is a race which has been frequently won by three-year-olds, notable among which were Nightmarch, carrying 8.0, in 1929, and Silver Scorn, who in 1933 carried 9.2, the record weight for one of the age. Taumaniai, the Great Autumn Handicap winner of 1935, preceded that victory by success in the Dunedin Cap as a three-year-old, liis weight being 7.12.
