PREPARING FOR WAR
GERMANY’S DEFENCES VILLAGES MOVED. Huge Scheme Of Frontier Fortifications. Press Association—-Copyright. London, Jan. 22. The scale on which Germany is fortifying the left bank of the Rhine is shown by a Strasbourg report that 14 whole villages in the Baumholder and Meisenheim districts of the Palatinate are being evacuated, the inhabitants being settled in Mecklenberg, says the correspondent of the Morning Post at Paris. The German fortifications will not be built immediately on the frontier like the French Maginot line, but in hilly country well inside Germany. The Daily Mail’s diplomatic correspondent says the latest information from Berlin indicates that Germany has now completed the most important part, of 39 divisions and a vast air force. Work on the defences of the German North Sea islands has been Intensified since December, declares the Manchester Guardian.
