Jean Hersholt has begun his 429th motion picture role with his characterisation of a scientist in Metro-Goidwyn-Maycr's "His Brother’s Wife.” He has kept accurate score ot every screen role since he first entered pictures 25 years ago. LOCKS AS DECORATIONS. Just because Edith Atwater’s new purse is decorated with two padlocks, and t>"o dangling ke(ys, jt doesn’t mean that Edith mistrusts her fellowmen. It is simply the latest bag decoration from Paris. The tiny locks with their accompanying keys are only ornaments. Lift one loci, the bag opens; lift the other, and the bag shuts. Edith, w-ho is appear-ing-in- Joan Crawford's new M-G-M starring production, “The Gorgeous Hussy,” carries this bag of burgundy suede with a brown tailored suit. UNA MERKEL, Una Merkel spent a recent day off from the Mehro-Goldwyn-Mayer “Born to Dance” set, shopping for a new autumn wardrobe. Una’s prize “find” was a smart little one-piece frock of grey wool, buttoned high at the neck with filigree silver buttons Over thej frock goes a half-length cape of grey Persian lamb, and a tiny hat of matching fur completes the ensemble. With it Una wears black accessories.
SWEATER CLEANING. Betty Furness has solved the sweater cleaning problem. She has had a wooden block made of exactly, her own measurements. Betty then launders the sweaters herself and slips them on the block to dry. They come out exactly the measurements they were before, with not a trace of stretching or sagging.
THE LATEST. Add to the list of unusual autographs! When Robert Montgomery left the ‘“preview” of his picture, “Suicide Club,” he was approached. by a student from the University of California, who asked for an autograph. The* M-G-M star said •‘Yes,” and started to look for the boy’s autograph book. “Right this way,” said the lad as he led Montgomery to his car. “Please sign on my new tyres!”
CARRYING LIPSTICK. Mary Carlisle has devised a manner in which to keep hiur lipstick handy, especially while travelling. She has had it fastened to a braided leather strap, which is pulled through the lapel buttonhole of her tailored suit r Tfye lipstick slips into the breast pocket, along with a tiny pocket mirror.
