SWIMMING TITLES.

EVENTS ABANDONED. Cancellation Of All Championships This Year. The New Zealand 1937 national swimming championships set down for decision at New Plymouth next month have been abandoned, but New Plymouth will be the venue of next year’s championships. Definite advice to this effect was received by Mr. J. F. Devine, honorary secretary of the Taranaki Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association, last night from, Mr. B. O’Neill, Dominion secretary. The decision was made last night at a meeting of the council of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association at Christchurch. Advice was also received last night, that a New Zealand team of swimmers would compete at the Empire Games at Sydney in February of next year, and the New Zealand council suggested that the championships should be set down for decision either during the first week in January before the team’s departure for Sydney, or in the latter part of February after the team’s return.

The championship sub-committee of the Taranaki centre, Which held a special meeting last night in expectation of some notification from the cou/ipil, decided to recommend to the centre that the Dominion championships be held during the first week of January, 1938. The dates tentatively selected were January 5, 6 and 8, with the Annette Kellerman Cup to be decided on January 9.

The Maori championships and the junior and intermediate championships will also be definitely abandoned this year because of the epidemic of infantile paralysis, says a Press -Association message from Christchurch. Because of the abandonment of all championship meetings the council decided in order to have a guide for the selection of probable representatives for the Empire Gaines at Sydney in February 1938, to ask centres to furnish a list of times of their leading swimmers so that a ranking list, could be compiled.
