SHORTAGE OF FARM LABOUR

A desire to assist the farming community in easing the problem of th? shortage of farm workers is expressed by the New Zealand Federation of Local Bodies employees and by builders, contractors' and general workers, in a communication to Mr. A. P. O’Shea, secretary of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union. “We have noted with interest your comments regarding the shortage of labour for various farm duties,” the federation states. “We may be able to assist you and the farmers if you will forward the following information, namely, the classes of men required, the total number re*quired, the localities in which la'bour is needed, together with the estimated number of workers sought for each locality, the period when labour, is wanted, the rates of wages and other remuneration and the general conditions of service.” The federation asks further if Mr. O’Shea could indicate whether it would be possible to provide conveyance to the place of work or, alternatively, to advance to men willing to take farm work the money required for their fares.
