BOWLING.
(By “Jack.”) From the players’ point of view the Dominion bowling tournament just concluded in Wellington proved one of the hardest yet experienced. Although there was not a great deal of rain the wind was most trying and on practically every green players had great difficulty in controlling the bowls on the fast greens. * * * Taranaki was well represented and made a good showing although not successful in winning any of the sections. Dickinson of the Avon club reached the semi-final in the singles in which there were 280 competitors. * * * The rinks competition again went to the Canterbury team skipped, by Howarth, who defeated Gray of Kelburn, in the final. A win for the Wellington skip would have proved very popular as he has attended the Dominion tournament for years without success.' * * * The pairs went to a Petone rink skipped by Lowry, who defeated Manning of Timaru in final. The singles went to Canterbury, Spearman of the Sydenham club being the winner and Mingins of Epsom the runnerup.
The entries for all the competitions proved to be a record for Wellington and was only once beaten by Auckland, two years ago. The next tournament will be held in Dunedin next January where some of the best greens and also players are to be found.
