PERIL IN FOG
ORDEAL FOR PASSENGERS. Several hundred holiday-makers who recently left Cariff on the steamship Cambria had a thrilling experience when they reached Weston-super-Mare. The Cambria was uahle to make the pier owing to fog, and so anchored in the bay. A local boatman named Bruford, put out into the gloom and, having located the vessel with difficulty, took off 12 of the Weston-bound passengers in his motor-boat. On the way back, howover, the motor-boat grounded on rocks while making her way to the pier jetty. A former lifeboat, now used for pleasure purposes, went in search of the motor-boat, but could not find her. Finally, a punt discovered her and took her 12 passengers to the shore. The motor-boat remained stranded till the evening tide. The Cambria herself nearly ran on to rocks at the end of Birnbeck Pier. She was warned just in time by members of the pier staff who s houted through megaphones.
