400 M.P.H. CAR
A new British racing ear that maj reach 400 miles an hour is being de signed in secret by Captain Georg> Eyston, the famous racing motorist and record-breaker, for his attack next year upon Sir Malcolm Campbell’s lane speed record of 300 miles an hour. The car may be built to an entirely new design that is claimed to reduce air resistance far more efficiently than is possible with ordinary streamlining Captain Eyston is modest in bis hopes. “Sir Malcolm Campbell’s 300 miles an hour was a great achievement,” he says. “To best it means going to great extremes in everything—which, el course, is highly experimental. “Although I have taken great pains, I shall b e extremely lucky to exceed 300 mp.h. on the first trial.” Wind-tunnel tests are being earned out to prove the new design. These tests were described to me in detail by Captain Eyston yesterday. A wooden model of the car, built exactly to scale, one-eighth its correct size, is suspended in a tunnel, 4ft. high and 4ft. wide, by links connected with delicate balances.
A large propeller is started up to produce a gale of wind blowing at a fixed rate of I unit. a second, or nearly 70 miles an hour.
